VENUE FOR THE 15TH INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS ON PLASMA PHYSICS The Congress will take place at the Extension Center of the Catholic University of Chile with suitable spaces and technological infrastructure that make it the perfect choice for academic and scientific meetings. The Extension Center of the Catholic University of Chile is a Cultural Center with multiple activities and facilities. It occupies the building adjacent to the Central Campus of Catholic University of Chile. The building of neoclassical style with an area of 5.400 m2 has become one architectural landmark in our city, and an example of conservation that combines tradition and functionality. The Extension Center of the Catholic University of Chile is located at Avenida Libertador Bernardo O`Higgins 390 (also called Alameda 390). How to get to the venue? To get to the Center you should take the subway “line 1” and get off at the Catholic University of Chile station. The invited talks will be simultaneously held on the second floor, Auditorio 1, Auditorio 2, Auditorio 3 and in the Matte Room. Parque Forestal: It is the most traditional park in Santiago. It is located in downtown between Lastarria Neighborhood and the historical center which reference is the Plaza de Armas of Santiago. It goes along the Mapocho River crossing all the historical center of Santiago. It starts in the north in Plaza Baquedano (better known as Plaza Italia) continuing up to the Mapocho Station. In its middle point it is possible to see the Museo de Bellas Artes and the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo. In the Parque Forestal, important cultural and recreational activities are carried out, and one of the most important referential and attractive places of the capital of Chile. Across its 171,910 m2 aligned through the avenues Merced and José María Caro (Costanera). It is considered as a huge “green lung” in the middle of the historical center. Bellavista Neighborhood: It is an area located between the northern bank of the Mapocho River and the Cerro San Cristóbal, with Pío Nono Street as its mainstay column. At the beginning, it was a very Catholic and aristocratic area. Nowadays, it is possible to see the coexistence among popular bars, cultural centers and international gastronomy places. One of the main attractions is Pablo Neruda’s house called “La Chascona”. This was the only house that he Nobel Prize had in Santiago and where he lived with his last wife Matilde Urrutia. Nowadays, it has been turned into a museum, and it is possible to visit it from Tuesday to Sunday. In the Bellavista neighborhood you could also find the Funicular and the main entrance of the Parque Metropolitano de Santiago. This park is composed by the Cerro San Cristóbal and its adjacent areas. It is possible to find a recreational center, a nursery and the main zoo in the country called Zoológico Nacional de Chile which is highly visited throughout the year. Cerro San Cristóbal (Saint Cristobal Hill) is the highest hill in Santiago where the Parque Metropolitano is located. It is one of the most visited places for doing some sports during the weekends. Its panoramic view from the top of the hill is one of its main attractions together with the Sanctuary of Virgen de la Inmaculada Concepción. Other attractions of Cerro San Cristóbal are the Cable Car, a swimming pool, the National Zoo, a house of culture with concerts on Sundays, handicraft stores, among others. Palacio La Moneda and Plaza de la Ciudadanía: La Moneda Palace is the Chilean Seat of Government. It was built in 1799 and is considered as a national monument. It is located in the downtown with the Plaza de la Ciudadanía in front of the main facade. The Palace can be visited by Chilean citizens and tourists who have the possibility of going round all its inner yards of beautiful architecture. Teatro Municipal de Santiago: This National monument was built between 1853 and 1857. Its beautiful architecture welcomes lovers in opera, ballet and concerts besides the guided visits for tourists. Plaza de Armas: its design style was imposed by the Spaniards throughout America, being Plaza de Armas the starting point of the layout of the city. Nowadays, it is possible to see buildings that are a reflection of the old times. Some of these buildings are the Municipalidad de Santiago (nacional monument), Central Post Office Headquarters, the Real Audiencia Palace and the Metropolitan Cathedral. Cerro Santa Lucía: it is also a national monument, located in the downtown with 69 m high. It was the exact place in which the founding of Santiago city was carried out in 1541. Its great architectonic value is given by viewpoints, statues, small squares, and buildings in the top and slopes of the hill, besides its great historic value and the plentiful vegetation.
